Being the donut fryer in a bakery can be a thankless job. Not for Trent Hutson. Affectionately called the “Donut Guy,” Hutson was presented a plaque by his employer Ryke’s Bakery for his skill and dedication. The Muskegon, Mich.-based bakery earned fourth place in Michigan’s best donut contest, and it commends Hutson’s hard work in achieving that honor.
Renee Rouwhorst and her husband Butch have owned and operated Ryke’s Bakery, Catering and Cafe since 2003. “I’m a firm believer in ‘it takes a village’. Everything we do here is very much because of our team,” Renee Rouwhorst said.
The Michigan news show, MLive, sponsored the donut contest. It’s host, John Gonzalez “Gonzo”, visited bakeries with camera crews around the state to sample products from 33 “people’s choice” finalists that were determined by on-line voting.
“We had an absolute blast when they visited,” Rouwhorst said. “They were here on a Friday, and we were just jammin’. They got to see us in our element.”
The top five donuts in order were Hinkley Bakery, Jackson; Sweetwaters Donut Mill, Kalamazoo; Crust, Fenton; Rykes; and Dutch Girl Donuts, Detroit. Click here for more about the winners of the MLive Michigan’s Best Donut Contest.
